Ideas I Stole From My Friends
My twenty years in the world of EdTech have taught me many lessons. One lesson sticks out above all the rest. No matter what you’re doing, there is someone else is doing it differently and possibly even better than you. Take a moment to think about how many times you’ve visited another district and thought to yourself, “That’s a smart way to solve a problem. I’m going to try that when I get back to my district!”. Once back in your home district, you develop a solution loosely based on what you observed.

This presentation embraces that concept. Attendees will see examples of applications, tools, and ideas that I have borrowed throughout my career in public education. We will discuss how each of the solutions presented has provided value to our district stakeholders. Participants can expect to leave with at least one new tool in their toolkit.

Data Access Is Easier Than Ever – Is that A Good Thing?
Privacy and Data Interoperability should not be mutually exclusive terms. This is a great introductory session for teachers, IT staff and administrators and will provide a high level overview of the various student data privacy laws, recommendations and policies that impact data stewards each day.. We also will outline the tools and community support the Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC) freely provide to OH districts right now. The Current State of Digital Accessibility
The Web is fundamentally designed to work for all people by removing barriers to communication and interaction that exist in the physical world. Unfortunately, when web sites, applications, and/or software are poorly designed, they exclude those with cognitive, auditory, visual and/or motor skill disabilities. At Blackboard, accessibility and inclusive thinking are an imperative---not an afterthought. We recognize that we have the unique ability to positively impact the lives of people with disabilities and are working to deeply integrate accessibility into all aspects of our organizational culture. We are building tools and services that inspire people of all abilities to learn. Blackboard Ally, a revolutionary new accessibility solution that integrates directly into a district’s learning management and content management systems, embodies this commitment. Join us as we discuss the current state of digital accessibility and share examples of how we’re helping districts take clear control of their content with usability, accessibility and quality in mind.

Are you a Certified Educational Technology Leader?
The role of a Director of Technology in public education continues to change. In the past, CTOs spent their days worrying about server uptime, network throughput, and ticket counts. Modern education technology leaders must focus their attention on more than just the infrastructure. Data privacy and security, 1:1 computing, public relations, data reporting, and oh yeah, anything that plugs into the wall seems to fall under the IT umbrella. Are you up to the challenge?

The CETL certification is an excellent way to validate your skill set as it relates to modern edtech leadership. The certification is based on the Framework of Essential Skills of the K-12 CTO developed by COSN. The CETL exam covers the 10 specific skill areas which outline the responsibilities and knowledge needed to be a viable educational technology leader. Attendees of this session can expect to learn about the CETL and how to obtain the certification from one of only ten current CETLs in Ohio. This is a fantastic session for both veterans of the industry as well as rising stars.
